What Is This Service?

  • A gold standard treatment specialized for the treatment of Melasma (one of the toughest skin conditions to treat), Chloasma, Age/Liver Spots or scarring from acne.
  • Cosmelan MD is a depigmentation agent which acts by decreasing melanin from the skin. Melanin is responsible for the darkening of the skin and contributing to such factors as melasma and other skin discolorations. Melanin is increased by sun exposure, acne, aging, and hormone fluctuation.
  • This unique, multi-ingredient peel contains very active skin brightening ingredients such as azelaic acid, kojic acid, arbutine, phytic acid and ascorbic acid. Not only will they help treat and lighten existing pigmentation but also go one step further and inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for the production of melanin, giving your skin an extra line of defense in protecting itself against the formation of new pigmentation. By slowing down the production of new pigmentation, existing dark spots and discolouration will start to fade.

Procedure Time

The Cosmelan MD Peel Procedure is a two-step process. The first step is an in-office application of the peel by our Registered Nurse. The peel, which looks like a mask will be left on the skin anywhere from 6-12 hours depending on the individual need and severity of the skin. The patient will later wash the mask off at home after the recommended amount of hours. The second part of the process will be continued at home by the patient, through the continued use of the Cosmelan home care depigmentation system.

Chemical Peel Post-Care Instructions

  • Day 1: After the Chemical Application

    · Generally, make-up can be applied immediately after treatment.
    · Wait a minimum of 3-4 hours before contact with water, including swimming, hot tubs, & saunas.
    · Avoid exercise or any activity that causes perspiration (with the exception of light walking) for the first 24 hours following treatment.
    · Apply a thin layer of a skin recovery whenever the skin feels tight and dry like a sunburn.
    · Apply SPF 30 or higher several times per day. Failure to do so can cause hyperpigmentation and will reduce the desired outcome of the treatment.
    · If you choose to wear makeup the day of your treatment, cleanse your skin that evening using your fingertips with a gentle cleanser and cool water. If you are makeup-free is it recommended you wash your face the following morning.
  • Day 2-7: Chemical Treatment Process

    Morning:
    · Cleanse your skin using your fingertips with a gentle cleanser and cool water.
    · Apply skin recovery or gentle moisturizing cream.
    · Apply a high-quality sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher.

    Night:
    · Cleanse your skin using your fingertips with a gentle cleanser and cool water.
    · Apply skin recovery or gentle moisturizing cream.

Resume your normal skincare routine 7 days after your treatment, unless you are experiencing shedding or peeling.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do Chemical Peels hurt?

    Chemical Peels do not hurt.
  • Is there downtime with a Chemical Peel?

Little to no downtime for Maintenance Chemical Peels
  • What to avoid?

    • Avoid picking, peeling, or pulling shedding skin.  This interrupts your skin’s natural healing cycle. What’s more, you are likely to interfere with the results, increase your chance of infection, and may even cause permanent hyperpigmentation.
    • Avoid strenuous workouts, dry saunas and steam rooms. Increased blood circulation to the face can intensify warming, tingling, itching, redness or other uncomfortable side effects.
    • Avoid waxing facial hair at least 7 days hours after treatment.
    • Avoid prolonged sun exposure between 10AM and 4PM when the sun’s rays are strongest.
    • Avoid products that contain glycolic acid, Retin-A, Alpha Hydroxy, salicylic acid, or other topical acne medications.
  • When will I see results?

You should see results after 2-4 weeks after your treatment. Most patients need a series of 3 peels for best results.
